When it comes on to dating, do you believe the saying ‘opposites attract’? Would you date someone who is totally different from you? Different hobbies, different interests? Or would you rather get attached to someone who is just like you? While everyone has their own opinion on this topic, I’ve always leaned more towards the opposites attract rule. I just couldn’t imagine dating someone who is very similar to me. Things would get so repetitive and boring, fast. And no, I’m not saying sharing some similar interests is boring, but being with someone who is different will challenge you and force you to step out of your comfort zone a little. With that said, here are 3 reasons why I believe you should date your total opposite.
1. It fosters personal growth
Opposite personalities will undoubtedly lead to challenges in a relationship. As you work through these challenges, you’ll become more aware of who you really are and what aspects of your very self you need to improve. Overcoming these challenges will also require a lot of patience and compromise, and these qualities can help you grow into a more stronger, wiser, and better person.
2. It opens you up to new experiences
Being with someone who is different from you can force you to break out of your shell, and this will facilitate growth in the relationship, since you will be able to experience new things with your partner – be it a different sport, different food, different TV show, or different music. You’ll end up trying and even liking (or hating) a few things you would have never tried if you never met this person.
3. You’ll learn to think differently
One of my favourite things about dating your opposite will be the different perspectives you both will have on various topics. You’ll have some good ol’ discussions which you both won’t always agree on, but you will learn to respect each other’s opinions, strengthen your own, or it may even cause you to look at things in ways you would have never considered.
It’s really all about finding that right balance for your relationship. Even though you and your partner will have different interests, hobbies, and opinions, you should both share the same goals and work towards those.
Speaking of dating, I’ve been binge-watching the reality dating series, ‘Are You The One? (AYTO)’ lately, which airs on MTV. AYTO features 10 women and 10 men who went through an extensive matchmaking process, but the results of their match is not revealed to them. Instead, they’ll all spend 10 weeks living together in Hawaii trying to figure out who is ‘the one’. If they can successfully pair up with their predetermined partner, they’ll all split a million dollars. You have to check it out!
